Elizabeth Hoare Gallery, Liverpool Cathedral
St James Mount, Liverpool L1 7AZ
This gallery, high up in the triforium of Liverpool Cathedral, was opened in 1992 and it is the only museum in Britain devoted exclusively to the care and display of Victorian and Edwardian ecclesiastical embroidery. It contains examples of work by most of the major designers of the period, as well as designs, samples and finished pieces from commercial firms and convent workrooms. Although sited in an Anglican Cathedral, the collection also contains examples of embroideries worked for the Roman Catholic Church.
Only part of the collection is on show in the Gallery; the remainder is kept nearby, in a room converted for this purpose. This room contains the study collection, which can be seen by appointment. It also contains fragile examples awaiting conservation.
Below are some photographs showing examples of the collection on display.
